Tongariro River: 27.1 Flow (m3/sec)

Weather: 22 C Partially Sunny

If you've been keeping up with our recent blogs, you’ll know about some of the top-performing flies. If not, here’s a quick update on what’s been working lately!

The hot flies for nymphing have been stoneflies such as the 101 and Simons Uglies, followed by pheasant tail nymphs and hare and coppers. For wetlining, small wooly buggers in olive or tan will work long with a variety of traditional wet flies. In the evening, Mayfly emergers, and adult imitating flies such as a Parachute Adams imitating Mayflies, and Elk Hair Caddis to imitate the caddis adults seem to be the most effective. The Tongariro River has been fishing well lately, with browns and rainbows throughout the system. Nymphing continues to be the most effective technique however wetlining and dry fly have been good as well.
