The hot flies for nymphing have been traditional nymphs such as pheasant tail nymphs and hare and copper in size 14 and 16. other good options are stoneflies such as101andSimons Uglies. For wetlining, small wooly buggers in olive or tan will work long with a variety of traditional wet flies. In the evening, Mayfly emergers, and adult imitating flies such as aParachute Adams imitating Mayflies, andElk Hair Caddisto imitate the caddis adults seem to be the most effective. The evening rise hasn't been starting till around 8:30pm most nights, however can be worth staying out late to catch a nice trout! The Tongariro River has been fishing well lately, with browns and rainbows throughout the system. Nymphing continues to be the most effective technique however wetlining and dry fly have been good as well.
