Tongariro River: 26.9 Flow (m3/sec)

Weather: 21C, Partially Sunny, 19kmph wind

Nymphing has been the most effective fishing method on the Tongariro River recently, though dry fly fishing and wetlining can still yield results. For a nymph rig, pair a heavy "bomb" fly with a lighter nymph. Recommended bomb flies include the Dave Nymph and Hotspot Caddis, available in four colors and bead sizes. Great smaller nymphs to pair with these are the Pheasant Tail Nymph or Hare and Copper.

For wetlining, small Woolly Buggers in olive or tan work well, along with various traditional wet flies. During the evening rise, try caddis adult patterns, dry flies like an Elk Hair Caddis, or adult mayfly patterns such as a Parachute Adams. Both brown and rainbow trout are present throughout the river system.

With the holidays approaching, it’s a great time to find the perfect gift for the anglers in your life! Today, we’re featuring our selection of jig rigs, ideal for jigging on Lake Taupo, Rotorua, or any New Zealand lake. As summer arrives, jigging becomes one of the most effective ways to catch fish. These rigs feature three pre-tied fly patterns on fluoro line, saving you time on the water—just tie on the rig, attach a sinker, and you’re ready to fish! We offer options from Pat Swift Flies, Kilwell, and Black Magic, all under $30. A thoughtful gift for any keen fisherman!
