Tongariro River Flow: 28.6m3/sec

Weather: Overcast with rain showers later in the day

What was set to be a period of significant rain over the past few days did not equate to much, as has been a reoccurring theme lately. The Tongariro only rose to 31 cumecs on Saturday which is a very minimal change. The rest of the week looks to be a reasonably sunnier and warmer period, so it seems like we'll have to continue being patient for larger rains.

However, there are lots of fish in the river at the moment. Therefore, those anglers who can find/ figure out where these running fish sit during low and clear winter conditions can be very successful. For anglers less familiar with the Taupo fishery it's important to remember these fish are migrating up the river to spawn so often hold in slightly different lies than resident fish, who's primary objective is feeding. From my experience pods of fish will often hold throughout the bottom half of larger runs, towards the centre of the river or on the side that is hardest to reach for most fishermen.

Towards the end of last week, I got out for a half day fish by myself and was treated to a stunning winters day with not many other anglers on the water. I caught great numbers of fish throwing a 4mm tungsten beaded caddis imitation with a #14 hare and copper trailing behind. I was fishing my flies a couple meters beneath an indicator and doing long Tongariro roll casts to reach far across the river.
