Saturday 13th July 2024

Another beautiful clear sunny day in Turangi, with the Tongariro flowing at 27.6 cumecs, she's still low and clear. Natural patterns, light tippet and small lightly coloured indicators will be the way to go today; stealth mode!

I have been overseas for the past month and couldn't be happier to be back on the local waters with all the fantastic fresh fish running in good numbers, it's great to have a bend in the rod so regularly once again. The big increase in fish numbers in just 4 weeks is amazing and very welcome!

Myself and Wally headed up the Hinemaiaia on Tuesday to get our Sage's bending and we had a blast! Plenty of fresh fish and beautiful coloured up jacks in true dark Hine style. We found otter eggs, caddis and hare & coppers to be very effective.

The Tongariro has been challenging fun in the low clear water, I've been tying up natural bomb nymphs & streamers in the evenings with the trusty Hanak slotted beads, that fit on the strong sturdy and very sharp Kamasan hooks, a favourite choice of mine, and they stay sharp!

It's great to be back and l am looking forward to the predicted pressure change early next week which should bring on a new wave of running fish, I can't wait to get back out to the Delta on the sinking lines and the double hand spey rod when we get a bit more flow!

See you out there team!
