The rain is here at last!

The Tongariro is currently flowing at 29.4 cumecs, is still on the rise and hopefully will continue to do so for the coming days forecast rain.

Some great reports from yesterday afternoon anglers, as the fish began their run as the rain began to fall. A number of good quality silver fish were caught for those braving the weather. Some good results from some anglers this morning down the lower section of the Tongariro, most swinging green & olive unweighted woolly buggers, with orange hotspots, catching silver bullets.

Now is the time to bring out the spey rods & wet lines, with that bit more flow. Target the edges and shallower water where the fish find it easier to swim & rest, especially as the water hopefully picks up a bit of muddy colour. Fish will hold in different places with a rise of flow. Tina has been out with Gary doing fabulously on the spey & catching some beautiful fish! Both Tina and I love the Patagonia Torrentshell jackets, which keep you dry & cosy and being a light overlayer, you can add as many layers underneath as you need.

I have been out a few times this week, finding the odd fish amongst the challenging low, clear conditions on the Tongariro. The Hinemaiaia is always a good time, with guaranteed fish in every run & pool. Make sure you use an adjustable Strike indicator set up for the much lower water than the Tongariro set ups. This allows you to slide your indicator down the leader to ensure good connection between you and the fish, without your nymphs catching the bottom or missing eats from the plentiful fish. They are essential, super easy to use, set up and we are happy to explain & demonstrate in store. You will never be without them once you give them a go!

There are plenty of fish in the rivers, keep moving through the pools and runs to find them & change your flies regularly until you tune into what's on the menu.

Enjoy the fabulous fishing team! I'll see you out there!
