Saturday 3rd August 2024

Weather: A cold frosty start, with clear & sunny skies, with another frost coming tonight & more sunshine on the way.

Tongariro River Flow: 29 cumecs (m³/s)

The river is slowly dropping after a peak flow of 34.5 cumecs earlier in the week which has certainly brought more fish into the system with lots of silver bars being landed & the wonderful sounds of cheering anglers along the river as fresh acrobatic fish make welcome appearances.

Slushies, otter eggs & Manic Tackle eggs have been very effective, with lighter colours being the preferred choice in the clearing water.

As the river becomes lower and clearer, natural patterns such as the stonefly imitations 'Simon's Ugly' & the '101' and the trusty Category 3 hare & copper are hard for the fish to refuse.

Gary has been up to his usual tricks, putting in the hard work and early morning starts to get the goods and recently landed this beauty rainbow who was having none of it while posing for a photo! I encouraged him to share this photo of the elusive silver chunk!

The early morning river mouth fishing has had mixed results, some mornings being very productive and others quieter. But you just never know, and it's always worth giving it a go and what a way to start the day. Heave and leave eggs, smelt patterns & woolly buggers are the go.

These cold starts & days make for cold hands! We have a range of gloves, including the cosy & stretchy Guideline Fir-Skins & soft merino wool gloves full and half finger, perfect for keeping those fingers alive to tie those knots!

Keep enjoying the fishing guys and girls! If you're looking at improving your casting, remember we have a Fly Casting workshop here in Turangi on Sunday 18th August, if you'd like to join us, send us an email: sport.life.guides@gmail.com

You can also book guiding days & make enquiries with our fabulous knowledgeable team of Sporting Life Guides via this email.

See you out there!
