A beautiful sunny day for Turangi and while it is a comfortable crisp temperature at present time, we expect it to heat up out there so be sure to cover up whilst staying hydrated.
Brown trout stories keep on coming through to the shop which is great to hear! They sure make a majority of anglers work for 'em, especially on the Tongariro. Bryan caught his PB brown pictured below on a wet fly, size 12, following a nymph weight approx. 1.5g
Josh, who has been out on the Tongariro at any given day has consistently been using large dries with a stonefly trailing beneath. Great work guys!
Last week my plans for some back country fishing fell through due to the rain we received, so back to the lake edge I went 😅 and as usual it didn't disappoint.
At any river mouth I fish over the course of summer I always kick back and watch from the shoreline for any sign of fish targeting smelt/bullies close to the edge or on the flats prior to fishing the rip itself but on this particular day I went straight for the rip using a smelt pattern on an intermediate line. It was quite slow going so I changed over to my RIO Fathom WF6S3 line which provided numbers of quality fish up until I noticed fish cruising the shoreline, so back to the intermediate line I went which scored the stunning silver rainbow which just about blinded me with its mirror-like exterior 😆
Jigging from 35-45m+ has been the go-to for quality fish and numbers, seeing Ginger Mick and Grey Ghost variants doing the trick.
