Brown and rainbow trout have been active on the Tongariro. While the number of fish in the river has decreased slightly compared to earlier in the season, the quality of catches has improved. Anglers are landing large brown trout migrating from the lake, providing an exciting challenge. Small size 16 pheasant tail flies have been particularly effective, especially when used with lighter tippet due to the low and clear water conditions. Focus on finding brown trout in deep pool bottoms and slow, shallow waters near the banks.
