This morning started off foggy again, with barely a breath of wind around. It wasn’t quite as cold as yesterday, but temperatures were still sitting around 3°C early on. I headed down to the Major Jones Bridge with Griffen dog and Sombra the ginger cat to grab a few photos. Once the sun broke through, we were treated to another spectacular morning for a couple of hours before the cloud rolled back in. It’s been on-and-off cloudy for most of the day since then. Conditions that are actually helping the fishing, as the extra cover stops the fish from becoming too spooky.
Reports through the shop today have carried a similar theme to the last few days: fishing has been tough, but the fish that are being caught are in excellent condition and relatively fresh-run.
Looking ahead, the overall pattern of dry weather is set to continue through the final week of May, thanks to another stubborn high-pressure system sitting over the country. Forecasts suggest generally settled conditions will persist across the North Island and the eastern South Island into next week.

Looking ahead, the forecast has shifted once again. We had been hoping for a bit of rain over the weekend, but that’s now been pushed out in favour of another stretch of cloudy weather through the coming week. If things don’t change again, we’re now expecting a front of rain to arrive over the long weekend at the end of May.
That rain could really help kick off the winter runs properly. The lack of fresh water has been the main factor slowing anglers down lately, as just about every other condition has been lining up nicely.

It’s been a busy day in the shop unpacking a fresh shipment of Patagonia waders and boots. A delivery we’ve been eagerly waiting on just in time for winter. If you’ve been thinking about upgrading your waders, these come highly recommended by all of us here. Most of the staff are already using them and absolutely love them out on the water.
We’ve got a huge range of sizes available, so jump onto the website and check them out.

Turangi has been turning on some stunning autumn conditions lately, and with winter just around the corner there’s plenty to look forward to over the coming weeks. Whether you’re planning a quick day trip or a full weekend on the river, now is a great time to get down here and enjoy it.
Tight lines everyone, and we’ll see you on the river and in the shop!
