Weather: Overcast, with showers becoming widespread this morning, then turning to rain this evening. Northerlies developing for a time this afternoon and evening.
Tongariro River Flow: 21.1(m3/sec)
Finally, we have a good amount of rain in the forecast. A significant amount of rain is due to come in tonight and tomorrow. Hopefully bringing up all the rivers and ideally bringing in a nice early run of some fresh fish.
Although the recent fishing has still been great, with reports of some excellent condition fish being caught. Still on the smaller nymphs. I have been going down to size 18-20 natural patterns that have been very effective.
Jacob below with a very fresh brown in the lower river. Taken on a size #18 black Perdigon style nymph. Plus, his dad Amador with a nice hen, taken from the Hydro Pool.
Standby for another report this weekend, for an update on what has happened with this rain. I'm sure it will help out the rivers a fair bit.
Garry has been at the special lake recently and had a great day. With a few very decent fish to the net, In very good condition. Hopefully this rain gets some water flowing in, and the fish moving a bit more. The lake needs a good top up, and the fish hopefully get a chance to cool down from the warm tempts they have been dealing with in the past couple months.
The reports coming from the river-mouths have been mixed. With some having great luck in the evenings on smelt patterns. The night fishing has also drawn some luck. But we can hope this will start picking up in the next few weeks, as the fish start to congregate before they head upriver. We have stocked up well on Lumo night flies and everything else that should see you right for the river mouth fishing.
The boaties are finding luck jigging around the 35-40m mark. Still on the smaller smelt flies. Pat swifts Blue Mallard UV seems to be doing the damage.
