Weather: 13.7°C | Humidity: 24% | Fine conditions with light winds.

River Flow: 33.3 cumecs (m³/s)

Another frosty yet stunning morning here in Tūrangi, with the river looking absolutely picturesque under clear skies. Despite the chilly start, a few dedicated anglers were already out early making the most of the conditions.

With these calm, sunny winter mornings, we’ve continued to see the smaller, more natural-patterned flies producing the best results once the sun gets up over the water. Egg patterns have also been a reliable option during the low-light periods, particularly early morning and again around dusk, when fish appear to be feeding more confidently.

Yesterday afternoon, AB, Rosie and I headed out to the Hine for a few hours on the water. AB and Rosie were both fishing Euro-style setups, while I stuck with the trusty indicator rig. It turned into a fantastic little afternoon session, with all of us managing to connect with some fresh fish.

It was especially good to share a few quality fish with AB before he heads back up to Auckland. Those relaxed afternoons on the river with good company are hard to beat.

Looking ahead, the forecast is showing a bit more cloud cover moving in over the coming days, which should help make conditions a little more forgiving for anglers on the water. The colder nights are certainly still hanging around as we edge further into winter, but those slightly overcast conditions can often encourage fish to feed more confidently throughout the day.

Tight lines everyone!
