Thursday 14th May 2026

Weather: 11.4°C, sunny with southeasterly winds. Overnight low of 2°C.

River Flow: 34.5 cumecs (m³/s)

We’ve seen the Tongariro River fluctuate over the last few days, rising to 42 cumecs yesterday before dropping back to around 34 cumecs. Genesis Energy usually carries out some dam work leading into winter and throughout the season, which often influences the flows.

The current conditions are fantastic for fish moving upriver, and with the excellent weather forecast this week, it’s shaping up to be a great time to get out there. Even with the slightly higher flows, the river is looking absolutely stunning and remains very fishable. These fresh pushes of water are also encouraging new fish to run, with the small flow increases proving incredibly beneficial.

I sent Hamish down to have a look at the river yesterday, where he bumped into Brian, who had just hooked into another fish after already landing two before Hamish arrived. All the fish were being caught on egg patterns.

Reports coming through the shop throughout yesterday were very positive, with plenty of fresh fish moving through the system. Everyone who got out on the water enjoyed solid catch numbers.

We’ve got a little sale on at the moment for the Redington Path Combo. This rod is perfect for winter fishing and an absolute steal. At just $249.99 for the combo, it’s hard to beat. Stock is limited, so it’s definitely worth checking out while it lasts. We also have plenty of other sales going on so check out those while you are at it.

It’s definitely the perfect time to head out to the river and do some fishing.

Tight lines everyone!
