Tongariro River Flow: 32.5 m3/sec

Weather: Sunny with clear blue skies 🌞

Reports are still overwhelming positive with most anglers getting into a mixture of fresh and darker fish. The river is flowing at a nice 32 cumecs and is running clear, meaning natural flies are proving quite successful. My picks are either a size #12 or #14 hare and copper or a small caddis imitation trailing behind a heavy bomb to get down nice and deep.

A reminder that the more time your flies are in the water and down deep in that 'fishy' zone, the more fish you'll inevitably catch. Indicator nymphing is often done largely upstream of your position in the river. However, don't be afraid to let your nymphs drift well downstream of you and feed line out as it goes. I often find myself utilising the whole length of my fly line on the downstream end of my drift. Once a fish takes and the indicator dips, a big sweeping strike clears any slack line on the water and with sharp hooks the hook up and landing ratio is still very good, even at a long distance.

With sunny days ahead on the forecast, more and more fish will be looking to the surface to feed. Reports of many fish rising are already coming through today, as well as on warm days throughout the last couple of weeks. Be ready for some awesome hatches and dry fly action as we approach summer!

Sporting Life regular, Alan Taylor, back at it today catching plenty of fish!
