Tongariro River Flow: 27.9m3/sec

Weather: Cloudy ⛅

Where is Neil Cunnington Now?!

It feels like weeks, but it has been almost six months since we moved up to the warmth of Weipa in Far North Queensland where my partner has taken up a teaching assignment. As born and bred Queenslanders the extra heat found up here isn’t too bad, but the lure of more temperate climes will no doubt call us back to Turangi.

I had made several trips to Weipa over the last 17yrs and after dropping plenty of hints to see if there might be a possibility of living here (it worked for getting us to Turangi😊) no one was more surprised than me that we now call this place home, at least for a little while.

Weipa has a similar population to Turangi and sits on the western shores of Cape York Peninsula giving easy access to some great saltwater flyfishing. The Tongariro River has always been my Trouting Nirvana, and it would be fair to say that this land of red bauxite and heat will always be my salty equivalent. It offers a varied flyfishing experience from mangrove lined estuary creeks and rivers to clean beach flats that stretch for miles to open blue water. The species list is long!!

As a fly fisherman it doesn’t matter to me if it’s salt or fresh water but what I have learnt along this journey is that utilising the best of equipment is vital to making those memories that will stay with us always. For the best part of 25yrs Sporting life has been my “local” supplier of the best gear no matter whether we lived in Queensland or NZ. If you hanker to see some flyline and backing disappearing at speed out across a warm saltwater flat or tricking a wily bug muncher in a cold crystal-clear stream, then get it all sorted by the Team at Sporting Life Turangi.
